There are many, many aspects on your website that will affect your SEO (search engine optimisation). If you’re not sure what SEO is, read our latest blog on it!

Content is King

We know this already and content is increasingly becoming much more important in regards to SEO. Search engines and Google want to see that you are providing quality, information filled and useful content to your visitors. So, are your posts and pages well written, do they pertain to what your website or post is there for? Do you offer informative information to the visitors on the page which will encourage them to come back to your website again?

You also need to make sure you have enough content, don’t write massive essays, but provide enough information for your visitors so that they don’t feel they only have half of what they need!

Pages lacking in content lack in substance, which is viewed negatively by many search engines.

When you start writing your content, you need to bear your website visitors in mind. You might be the fount of knowledge in a certain field, and you might know all of the technical names for everything in that field, but will your visitors? Research the keywords and phrases they will use to find you, use the words and phrases in your text that they will search for online.

Fresh Content

In recent years, there has been a surge of blogs on the internet – while blogging might not lend itself to your business or website, we know that Google likes to see fresh content. The days of static websites once built and left for 5 years are long gone.

Google and visitors to your website want to see that you are there, working away behind the scenes, keeping them up to date with latest developments in your field or your latest news. You don’t need to publish a new post every week, we would recommend monthly or even every other month. Just be consistent.

Helping Google

Google will periodically send out “crawlers” to visit and crawl over your website. The easier the website is to crawl, the more Google likes it. This is also your chance to show Google what you’re about and what you see as important on your website. Here are some aspects of your website design you should bear in mind…for Google:

  • Using header tags ( <h1>Header 1 for example</h1> ) – header tags help Google see what your most important words and phrases are, and can be generally used as titles.
  • Avoid dynamic URLs, this makes Google’s job much harder
  • Internal linking – create easy navigation among pages and posts within a website
  • Remove image maps – Google can’t read them!
  • If you are adding images, make sure you add text into the Alt Tags – this way, even though Google can’t read the image it will see what the image is about
  • Remove flash and iFrames – again, Google just can’t see them!
  • Use bullet points, but not too much – Google views them as short and snappy information, not rich content
  • Embolden your important words – a word in bold has more weight, more importance
